THE PORTIUNCULA INDULGENCE

The Portiuncula Indulgence is the first plenary indulgence ever granted in the Roman Catholic Church. One who gains the Portiuncula Indulgence is freed from all temporal punishments and becomes as pure as after Baptism.

St. Francis of Assisi persuaded Pope Honorius III to grant a plenary indulgence to all who visit the Portiuncula (Little Portion) on the 2nd day of August and confess their sins. This indulgence has been extended to all Catholic churches throughout the world.

To obtain the Plenary Indulgence of
The Forgiveness of Assisi
(For oneself or for a departed soul):

1) Sacramental Confession
(8 days before or after);

2) Participation in the Holy Mass
And Eucharist
(August 2nd);

3) Recitation of The Apostles Creed,
Our Father,
And a prayer for the Pope’s Intentions

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

OUR LORD TOLD ST. FAUSTINA, “My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable Mercy. I desire that the ‘Feast of Mercy’ be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My Mercy.

THE SOUL THAT WILL GO TO CONFESSION AND RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION SHALL OBTAIN COMPLETE FORGIVENESS OF SINS ‘AND PUNISHMENT.’

On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My Mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender Mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My Love and Mercy throughout eternity. The ‘Feast of Mercy’ emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be ‘solemnly celebrated on THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EASTER.’ Mankind will not have Peace until it turns to the fount of My Mercy.”
(“Divine Mercy In My Soul,” Diary of St. Faustina, #699)

THE CHAPLET OF THE DIVINE MERCY is a Powerful prayer that pleads God’s Mercy on the whole world. (3:oo PM is the “Hour of Mercy.”)

“Today I was awakened by a great storm. The wind was raging, and it was raining in torrents, thunderbolts striking again and again. I began to pray that the storm would do no harm, when I heard the words: ‘Say the chaplet I have taught you, and the storm will cease.’
I began immediately to say the chaplet and hadn’t even finished it when the storm suddenly ceased, and I heard the words: ‘Through the chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My Will.’”
(“Divine Mercy In My Soul,” Diary of St. Faustina, #1731)

“When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior.” (“Divine Mercy In My Soul,” Diary of St. Faustina, #1541)

THE FEAST OF MERCY

What graces can I receive on this day?

Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina His desire to flood us with His graces on that day. Reflect on each of the promises and desires that He expressed about Divine Mercy Sunday, which are recorded in entry 699 of the Diary of St. Faustina -- the main passage about the Feast of Mercy:

• On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open.
• I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy [the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist].
• The soul that will go to Confession [beforehand] and receive Holy Communion [on that day] shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.
• On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened.
• Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.
• My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout eternity.
• Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity.
• The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness.
• It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.
• Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.

These promises and desires point to an amazing flood of graces that are available to us on Divine Mercy Sunday -- including complete forgiveness of sins and punishment! The slate can be wiped clean, and we can be granted a completely fresh start in life. _ Fr. George W. Kosicki, CSB

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR

A NEW PENTECOST

Catholic Charismatic Renewal

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

"What we learn in the New Testament on charisms, which appeared as visible signs of the coming of the Holy Spirit, is not a historical event of the past, but a reality ever alive. It is the same divine Spirit, soul of the Church, that acts in every age and those mysterious and effective interventions of the Spirit are manifest in our time in a providential way. The Movements and New Communities are like an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Church and in contemporary society. We can, therefore, rightly say that one of the positive elements and aspects of the Community of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is precisely their emphasis on the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit and their merit lies in having recalled their topicality in the Church." _ Address of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to Charismatic Catholics, October 2008

"...Do not grow weary of turning to Heaven: the world stands in need of prayer. It needs men and women who feel the attraction of Heaven in their life, who make praise to the Lord a new way of life. And may you be joyful Christians! I entrust you all to Mary Most Holy, present in the Upper Room at the event of Pentecost. Persevere with her in prayer, walk guided by the light of the living Holy Spirit, proclaiming the Good News of Christ." _ Address of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to Charismatic Catholics, May 26, 2012

Halfhearted Commitment to the Faith is Nauseating to Christ: "I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit (vomit) you out of my mouth." (Revelation 3:15-16)

Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. (Romans 12:11)

Evangelii Gaudium
Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis
On the Proclamation of the Gospel in
Today’s World

#259) Spirit-filled evangelizers means evangelizers fearlessly open to the working of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Spirit made the apostles go forth from themselves and turned them into heralds of God’s wondrous deeds, capable of speaking to each person in his or her own language. The Holy Spirit also grants the courage to proclaim the newness of the Gospel with boldness (parrhesía) in every time and place, even when it meets with opposition. Let us call upon him today, firmly rooted in prayer, for without prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our message empty. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words, but above all by a life transfigured by God’s presence.

#261) Whenever we say that something is “spirited,” it usually refers to some interior impulse which encourages, motivates, nourishes and gives meaning to our individual and communal activity. Spirit-filled evangelization is not the same as a set of tasks dutifully carried out despite one’s own personal inclinations and wishes. How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusiasm for a new chapter of evangelization full of fervor, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love and attraction! Yet I realize that no words of encouragement will be enough unless the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in our hearts. A spirit-filled evangelization is one guided by the Holy Spirit, for he is the soul of the Church called to proclaim the Gospel. Before offering some spiritual motivations and suggestions, I once more invoke the Holy Spirit. I implore him to come and renew the Church, to stir and impel her to go forth boldly to evangelize all peoples.

AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE

This morning, I believe the Lord showed me how to respond to a prayer request for someone with terminal cancer. I am also aware that this is an appropriate response to many other prayer requests I receive.

I replied: (The woman) should receive the Eucharist every day. For about 15 minutes after receiving Holy Communion, she will have within her, flowing through her body, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.

After receiving Holy Communion each day, (the woman) should pray:

Lord Jesus, as Your Blood mixes with mine and flows through my veins, purify my blood of all cancer cells. (Pause) Lord Jesus, as You flow through me, touch all the areas of my body that need to be restored to health. (Pause) Jesus, I surrender my life to You; take care of everything. Amen.

Of course, (the woman) must be free of all bitterness, resentment... and un-forgiveness. I also recommend The Surrender Novena -- Total Abandonment to God: http://catholicdeliverance.blogspot.com/2014/09/surrender.html

Although there is no distance in prayer, the charism of healing requires physical touch -- that is, “the laying on of hands.” Obviously, this cannot be done “long distance.” But, you do not need someone like me to receive God's healing touch. There is a more perfect way: the Sacraments of the Catholic Church.

Jesus Christ Is In The Eucharist! The doctrine of the Real Presence asserts that in the Holy Eucharist, Jesus is literally and wholly present -- body, blood, soul and divinity -- under the appearances of bread and wine.

“In the Eucharist is the same identical Jesus Who was carried by Mary for nine months in her womb before she delivered Him in Bethlehem. It is the selfsame Jesus Who died on the Cross, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.” _ Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.

“Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that, for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm. Do not judge in this matter by taste, but be fully assured by faith, not doubting that you have been deemed worthy of the body and blood of Christ.” _ Cyril of Jerusalem [Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem (348-378) “Doctor of the Church” (Catechetical Discourses)]

SEX DEMONS, INCUBI AND SUCCUBI

It is common for people with sexual sins (sexual fantasy, masturbation, fornication, pornography, adultery and/or homosexual practices) to be harassed or seduced nightly by sex demons (demons of lust) with vivid sexual dreams and sexually-explicit nightmares. (Sex demons can invade our dreams with pornographic fantasies of having sexual relations -- even with members of the same sex!) But some people are attacked, molested or raped "nightly" by sex demons (incubi and succubi).

“Last night as I lay on my bed, I heard someone whisper my name... Something spread my legs, and I was full of lust. It got on top of me and I could hardly breathe. I couldn't move. Then it (an “incubus”) started having sex with me! I know this sounds crazy but it happened.”

The unwanted spirit would visit her during the night. It would sexually stimulate her until she was powerless to resist. Then, she would succumb.

A few years ago, I was contacted by a man being harassed every day by sex demons (demons of lust). The attacks had been so subtle that he didn't recognize them as being demonic. At first he thought he had some kind of flea infestation in his carpet. The (invisible) fleas would attack his eyelashes, nose and ears... They would swarm around his legs -- and then swarm to his crotch, sting his genitals and sexually stimulate him.

INCUBI AND SUCCUBI

The incubus is a fallen angel -- a sex demon in male form that seduces and lies upon a woman during the night in order to have sexual relations with her. The succubus is a sex demon in female form that seduces and lies upon a man during the night in order to have sexual relations with him.

While asleep in bed, the woman or man is sexually aroused by some kind of (cold) dark presence in the room. It is a lustful presence that seduces... and stimulates. It is an entity that eventually attempts sexual penetration.

"The Nightmare" - Johann Henry Fuseli (1781)

Many women enjoy having “spiritual sex” with an incubus, a passionate lover that becomes a jealous "spirit husband." Many men enjoy having “spiritual sex” with a succubus, a passionate lover that becomes a jealous "spirit wife." Pleasant sexual arousal, seduction and carnal intercourse (during the night) can lead to unwelcomed sexual advances, molestation and rape (anytime). These sex demons feed upon the sexual energies of women and men. (The result is the deterioration of health.) Compliance with the demon’s desire is rewarded; resistance is severely punished.

When a succubus becomes a spirit wife, it can rob a man of his health and wealth, and destroy his relationships with women. When an incubus becomes a spirit husband, it can rob a woman of her health and wealth, and destroy her relationships with men.

This spirit causes failure in my relationships with men. Things spiral downward. I noticed this in my last relationship. "Oh I loved him and he, I. A promising young man when we met (but) wasn't that much by the time we went our ways."

The incubus or succubus can be summoned with a ritual found on the internet. The result can be demonic possession and a house infested with demons. (I have encountered such a case.)

Evil spirits attack and exploit weakness and vulnerability; they exasperate mental illness; and when doors are opened through sinful behavior... they enter in. In the case of the incubus or succubus, it could be sexual sin and perversion, abortion, sex magic... It could be a curse. (Incubi and succubi can be summoned and sent.) It could be dabbling in witchcraft or the Occult. But a door has been opened; consent has been given.

~ * * * ~

I know a woman who was once a victim of the sexually-stimulating attacks of an incubus. It began with a sexual relationship with a sorcerer, a practitioner of black magic. She told me he had performed “sex magic” on her. This was the “open door” -- her consent given.

Some time later, this woman (touched by evil) was working in the sex industry. She soon started her own “telephone sex” business with another man. Her perverted sexual sins provided another open door.

When the incubus entered her life, the woman welcomed the sexual pleasure it gave. She told me it would “lick” her while she was alone in bed -- but it did not end there! When I met her, she was suicidal, hearing voices… and being sexually assaulted by a demon! (Incubi and succubi are very real.)

~ * * * ~

When a woman is in mortal sin -- not in a state of grace -- prayer will have little effect on the incubus. So too, when a man is in mortal sin -- not in a state of grace -- prayer will have little effect on the succubus. And for one who has not been baptized, there is no protection.

Deliverance is possible through the
Sacraments of the Catholic Church.

If you are serious about stopping these spiritual attacks, you must get serious about living a Sacramental life -- a holy life. This means attending Daily Mass as often as possible and going to Confession as often as needed (when you fall into sin, or at least monthly). You need to grow in "sanctifying grace." [Sanctifying grace stays in the soul. It’s what makes the soul holy; it gives the soul supernatural life.] If you are unwilling to make such a commitment, you will have limited defense against these spiritual attacks.

Sometimes the "renewal of baptismal promises" is needed. Ask your priest to do the Renewal of Baptismal Promises and Sprinkling with Holy Water (as is done every Easter).

Women may need to be delivered from a “spirit husband.” Men may need to be delivered from a “spirit wife.” Some may need a formal exorcism (by a Catholic priest). All will need prayer for inner-healing.

If you are serious about stopping these NIGHTLY spiritual attacks, become a DAILY Communicant.

The incubus or succubus will return (Matthew 12:43-45 / Luke 11:24-26). And when it does return, it must find all doors closed! It must find the person in a “state of grace” and “Sacramentally” fortified.

And whenever you feel the touch (or sting) of the sex demon, cry out to Mary as a child cries out for his mother: "Mother Mary, Queen of Heaven, please pray for me." / "Mother Mary, please protect me during the night."

INCUBUS IN SCRIPTURE

The Nephilim appeared on earth in those days, as well as later, after the sons of God (fallen angels) had intercourse with the daughters of human beings, who bore them sons. They were the heroes of old, the men of renown. (Genesis 6:4)

[The belief that semi-divine human beings (giants) -- the heroes of old -- once lived on earth.]

The Bible generally regards them in a negative light (Numbers 13:33; Ezekiel 32:27). The point here is that even these heroes, filled with vitality from their semi-divine origin, come under God’s decree.

He did not forgive the princes of old (the mighty destroyed in the flood) who rebelled long ago in their might. (Sirach 16:7) _ New American Bible

~ * * * ~

The incubus is often referred to as a “spirit husband.” The succubus is often referred to as a “spirit wife.” A severe case of incubus is found in the Book of Tobit (Chapter 6:13-18).

“…Now listen to me, brother (Tobiah); we will speak about this girl (Sarah) tonight, so that we may arrange her engagement to you. Then when we return from Rages [Media (North-West Iran)], we will take her and bring her back with us to your house.”

But Tobiah said to (Archangel) Raphael in reply, “Brother Azariah (Archangel Raphael had disguised himself as a man), I have heard that she has already been given in marriage to seven husbands, and that they have died in the bridal chamber. On the very night they approached her, they would die. I have also heard it said that it was a demon that killed them (the demon of lust, Asmodeus).

So now I too am afraid of this demon, because it is in love with her and does not harm her; but it kills any man who wishes to come close to her…

Raphael said to him: “Do you not remember your father’s commands? He ordered you to marry a woman from your own ancestral family. Now listen to me, brother; do not worry about that demon. Take Sarah. I know that tonight she will be given to you as your wife…

When you go into the bridal chamber, take some of the fish’s liver and the heart, and place them on the embers intended for incense, and an odor will be given off. (In 700 B.C., these organs were believed to have healing powers.) As soon as the demon smells the odor, it will flee and never again show itself near her. Then when you are about to have intercourse with her, both of you must first get up to pray. Beg the Lord of heaven that mercy and protection be granted you… (Tobit 6:13-18) _ New American Bible

The Summa Theologica
St. Thomas Aquinas

...It is not contrary to the truth of the holy angels that through their assumed bodies they appear to be living men, although they are really not. For the bodies are assumed merely for this purpose, that the spiritual properties and works of the angels may be manifested by the properties of man...

Sensation is entirely a vital function. Consequently it can in no way be said that the angels perceive through the organs of their assumed bodies. Yet such bodies are not fashioned in vain; for they are not fashioned for the purpose of sensation through them, but to this end, that by such bodily organs the spiritual powers of the angels may be made manifest...

As Augustine says (De Civ. Dei xv): "Many persons affirm that they have had the experience, or have heard from such as have experienced it, that the Satyrs and Fauns, whom the common folk call incubi (and succubi), have often presented themselves before women, and have sought and procured intercourse with them. Hence it is folly to deny it.

[Now giants (the Nephilim) were upon the earth in those days. For after the sons of God went in to (had intercourse with) the daughters of men, and they brought forth children, these are the mighty men (the heroes) of old, men of renown. (Genesis 6:4) Douay-Rheims Bible]

But God's holy angels could not fall in such fashion before the deluge. Hence by the sons of God are to be understood the sons of Seth, who were good; while by the daughters of men the Scripture designates those who sprang from the race of Cain. Nor is it to be wondered at that giants should be born of them; for they were not all giants, albeit there were many more before than after the deluge." Still if some are occasionally begotten from demons, it is not from the seed of such demons, nor from their assumed bodies, but from the seed of men taken for the purpose; as when the demon assumes first the form of a woman, and afterwards of a man; just as they take the seed of other things for other generating purposes, as Augustine says (De Trin. iii), so that the person born is not the child of a demon, but of a man.
St. Thomas Aquinas, The Summa Theologica, Q 51, Art. 3, #1,2,6

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

“For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.” (Ephesians 6:12)

“Know that you are now on a great stage where all heaven and earth are watching you. Fight like a knight, so that I can reward you. Do not be unduly fearful, because you are not alone.” _ Diary of St. Faustina (1760)

The Rosary is our weapon against the world, the flesh, the Devil and his evil spirits. And living a Sacramental life [Daily Mass (when possible) and frequent Confession] is the best defense we have against the enemy.

POWER OF THE BLESSING

Evil spirits often speak, rant and rave through people. The good news is that we have the power to silence them. When these spiritual attacks occur, immediately respond with a blessing:

“Lord Jesus, please bless this person /
these people.”

“Lord Jesus, please bless everyone
in this house.”
- etcetera -

The blessing will drive the evil spirits away, and the person will become quiet. (It may take a few moments for the person to calm down, but you will have defused the situation.) When we bless those who curse us, deliverance occurs.

When entering a building
(house, office, store, church…)
Or a car, bus, train, plane…
ALWAYS ASK JESUS TO BLESS EVERYONE.

“Lord Jesus, please bless everyone
in this place.”

“Lord Jesus, please bless everyone
I come in contact with.”

This will prevent the enemy from using others against you. Evil spirits cause people to behave badly. But you can protect yourself.

Before answering the phone
and before making a call,
ALWAYS ASK JESUS TO BLESS
THE PHONE CALL -- TO BLESS
THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END.

“Lord Jesus, please bless
this phone call.”

“Lord Jesus, please bless _____
(the person you are calling).”

This will prevent the enemy from interfering with your conversation. Evil spirits cause confusion, misunderstandings, arguments… But you can protect yourself.

PLEADING THE BLOOD OF JESUS
(APPLYING THE BLOOD OF JESUS)

A Defensive Prayer for Protection

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
my spouse and children.”

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
my family, home and property.”

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
my church and on all church property.”
- etcetera -

Evil spirits, and people under their influence, will avoid everything covered with the Blood of Jesus.

An Offensive Spiritual Weapon for Deliverance

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on my mind.
I plead the Blood of Jesus on
every thought in my mind.”

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
my body.”

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
every evil spirit attacking my mind
and body.”

“I plead the Blood of Jesus on
the air and atmosphere in this place.”

Use this spiritual weapon when you are harassed by impure thoughts, attacked with strong temptation, tempted to commit sin… when thoughts distract you during Mass, interfere with your prayer life, torment you during the night, preventing a good sleep… when you are afflicted with depressive or obsessive-compulsive thoughts… when your thoughts falsely accuse you of wrongdoing… when your thoughts are overly critical of yourself… when your thoughts become confused or “out of control”… when your thoughts are not your own…

St. Faustina Kowalska

From the Diary of St. Faustina, “Divine Mercy in My Soul”: Conference on Spiritual Warfare, Cracow-Pradnik

June 2, 1938 _ “My daughter, I want to teach you about spiritual warfare. Never trust in yourself, but abandon yourself totally to My Will. In desolation, darkness and various doubts, have recourse to Me and to your spiritual director. He will always answer you in My Name. Do not bargain with any temptation; lock yourself immediately in My Heart and, at the first opportunity, reveal the temptation to the confessor. Put your self-love in the last place, so that it does not taint your deeds. Bear with yourself with great patience. Do not neglect interior mortifications. Always justify to yourself the opinions of your superiors and of your confessor. Shun murmurers like a plague. Let all act as they like; you are to act as I want you to.

Observe the rule as faithfully as you can. If someone causes you trouble, think what good you can do for the person who caused you to suffer. Do not pour out your feelings. Be silent when you are rebuked. Do not ask everyone’s opinion, but only the opinion of your confessor; be as frank and simple as a child with him. Do not become discouraged by ingratitude. Do not examine with curiosity the roads down which I lead you. When boredom and discouragement beat against your heart, run away from yourself and hide in My Heart. Do not fear struggle; courage itself often intimidates temptations, and they dare not attack us.

Always fight with the deep conviction that I am with you. Do not be guided by feeling, because it is not always under your control; but all merit lies in the will. Always depend upon your superiors, even in the smallest things. I will not delude you with prospects of peace and consolations; on the contrary, prepare for great battles. Know that you are now on a great stage where all heaven and earth are watching you. Fight like a knight, so that I can reward you. Do not be unduly fearful, because you are not alone.” (1760)

REVERENCE FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST

“The picture above is of my home in Fort Valley, Virginia, and the light is coming from my (private) chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. There is no light in the window and there is no sun out on the day of the picture.” (It was a cloudy day.) _ Fr. Robert Lange

In May 2007, Bishop Paul Loverde of the Arlington Diocese of Northern Virginia gave Rev. Robert Lange permission to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in his chapel on the second floor of his home. The Eucharist had been reserved in the chapel less than a week when this picture was taken from the front porch of a neighbor’s home.

When the neighbor aimed her camera and tried to focus, she said the light coming from Fr. Robert Lange’s house was so bright that it was difficult to look into the camera. (It was a cloudy day and there was no light on in the chapel.) She took the picture and the image -- the Star of David -- is what came out on her digital camera. Not being Catholic, the neighbor had no understanding of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

“My opinion is that Our Lord wanted to give us a beautiful reminder of His True Presence in the Holy Eucharist -- Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity! It is a reminder that He is with us always, that we are never alone, that He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. It is a vivid reminder that He truly suffered and died on the Cross and that He Is Present in this world -- until His Second Coming -- in this Most Special manner -- the Eucharist.
Just as the Star appeared over the stable in Bethlehem when the Christ Child was born, so the Star of David has appeared through the window of my chapel on St. David’s Church Road, Fort Valley, Virginia, to remind us of His Care, Love, Protection, and Presence in our lives today and always.”

ADDICTIONS AND DIVINE MERCY

From “Divine Mercy Answers Life’s Crises and Problems”
By Fr. George W. Kosicki, C.S.B.

Father George Kosicki, CSB (1928 - 2014) worked with
the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception
in spreading the message of Divine Mercy.

“What Should I Do When I’m Addicted?”

There are various types of addictions. They all affect the whole person in body, mind and spirit. The various addictions begin with a seeking of euphoria or pleasure and eventually end in moral degradation and violent behavior. Consider the following:

Addiction to alcohol is a complex phenomenon that involves the chemistry of the brain, genetic propensity stimulated by excessive intake of alcohol and stress. Some researchers have shown that the break down product of alcohol is not excreted but is “dumped” into the brain and sits on the site of the endorphins. The endorphins are the natural chemicals that stimulate a sense of well-being and pleasure. The end product of alcohol metabolism blocks the site of the natural endorphins -- so the alcoholic is addicted to stimulating the endorphin pleasure site with alcohol.

Addiction to drugs (such as heroine, etc.) follows the same pattern as the end-product of the metabolism of alcohol’s inhibiting the natural endorphins. So the drug addict seeks the euphoria of the drug in a compulsive way.

Addiction to pornography is the latest addition to the list of addictions. The euphoric site in the brain is stimulated to give a sense of pleasure from looking at pornographic materials, for example on the internet. Researchers are reporting that addiction to pornography is the major cause of most of the violent action of molestation of the young and the break-up of the family.

“What Should I Do As An Addict?”

There are Twelve-Step programs for each of the various addictions. Seek them out for help; that is why they exist.

In terms of Divine Mercy as the antidote to addiction, consider the following points that echo the Twelve-Step programs:
  1. Admit your misery and your inability to overcome the complex pneumo-psycho-somatic (spiritual, psychological and physical) addiction by yourself. Turn to God’s mercy. Plunge into the ocean of God’s mercy with complete trust.
  2. Repent of your sinful addiction and repent of your violent actions and moral degradation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

DELIVERANCE AND INNER HEALING

Many Protestant deliverance ministers behave as though freedom from the demonic is the ultimate objective. One of these once told me, “I’ll have you know that I am ‘triple-mantled’ for deliverance.” I don’t even know what that means.

Deliverance is part of God’s healing ministry. And deliverance -- apart from inner healing -- is abuse. The ultimate objective should be “inner healing and wholeness.”

“Nature abhors a vacuum.” The same is true in the spiritual realm. Deliverance from evil spirits creates a “spiritual vacuum.” Therefore, the immediate need (for one who is already baptized) is for the “infilling of the Holy Spirit” and prayer for “inner healing.” Then, through Daily Eucharist and frequent Confession, one will continue to be healed and become more whole. Sanctifying Grace received in the Sacraments fills the “spiritual vacuum.”

Some time ago, I came to realize that many of the healings I witness are, in fact, deliverances. A woman once exclaimed, “When you prayed for me, I felt something lift!” It was an oppressing spirit that left her -- because of the anointing (that is, the charism of healing).

For some cases, all that is required is a touch and a prayer; other cases require some spiritual warfare. And all that is required of me are simple commands “in the Name of Jesus,” as inspired by the Holy Spirit. [I do not perform exorcisms. Only a priest may perform an exorcism -- and only with the permission of his Bishop.] It is this charism that causes demons to manifest, and ultimately leave.

The charism that heals also delivers!

San Francisco, CA (September 1990)

_ I attended a Mario Murillo Crusade where I (a Catholic layman) was welcomed to pray for people in the ministry tent. One night I was led to three women. As I approached, one of them became silent and lowered her head. When I looked into her face, I saw her eyes “roll backward” into her skull. Only the white of her eyes could be seen.

The woman was possessed -- but the demons did not begin to manifest until I approached her. It was the presence of the anointing (the charism) that caused these demons to manifest.

This was my “introduction” to the deliverance side of God’s healing ministry. [God is in control, and I do my part.] I followed the inspirations of the Holy Spirit, and the woman was set free.

Days later, I was informed that this woman was one of two lesbians who had made a “suicide pact” with the Devil. That night, she had planned to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge -- but God intervened, and led her to the Crusade (below the bridge) where He had placed me.

Diocese of Arlington, VA (October 2010)

_ After a healing service in Northern Virginia, a psychotherapist asked me to pray with her patients. Then she took me to see one of her patients believed to be a “locutionist.” [A locution is a form of private revelation, similar to an apparition, but rather than being seen a locution is heard or received internally.]

The locutions were convincing -- but diabolical. The woman’s psychotherapist suspected demonic possession, and an exorcism had been approved and scheduled. I had been invited to participate in this exorcism, but the invitation was withdrawn because of liability concerns. Later, I was told the exorcism had been cancelled.

As we approached a large house in the suburbs, a woman yelled from the front door, “They know you’re coming!” The woman invited us into her home and proudly showed us her “shrine” -- a beautiful display of holy icons and statues… She was a nice lady, and it was obvious that she was a devout Catholic. But when she began to speak about Jesus, I heard the mocking voice of a demon!

I interrupted with the command, “In the Name of Jesus, evil spirit shut up!” And immediately, the woman became silent. I remember the surprised look on the doctor’s face.

I asked the woman to sit down, and we began to pray. I asked the doctor to pray the Rosary while I prayed for deliverance and inner-healing. [Once delivered, a man once said that he could feel the Power of the Rosary -- during the war for his soul!]

After two 3-hour sessions, the woman was free. And when the doctor asked me about the diabolical locutions, I told her to burn them.

Once delivered from evil spirits, there is no going back to the former (sinful) way of life. One is now called to “a life of holiness” -- a life centered on the Holy Eucharist. This is now very important -- because the evil spirits will return!

“When an unclean (evil) spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’ But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.” (Luke 11:24-26)

[“When the assault of demons (evil spirits) is repulsed, the devil is not rendered incapable of further attack. But it seems that he cannot return immediately to the assault, but only after the lapse of a definite time.” _ St. Thomas Aquinas, The Summa Theologica]

When evil spirits return and find their (former) home Spirit-filled and Sacramentally fortified, they cannot “move in and dwell there.” All doors are closed; all permission (consent) is revoked.

CONFESSION: HEALING THE SOUL

One’s mortal sin testifies to Satan’s victory in one’s life.

When’s the last time you went to confession? The Sacrament of Reconciliation not only takes away our sins, but takes away any “right” Satan has that we may have relinquished to him through sin. One exorcist told me that a lot of deliverance happens in the context of sacramental confession... The voice of the accuser is silenced in the face of God’s mercy, thus restoring peace of mind and soul. Satan is a “liar and the father of lies.” So when you bring the lies you’ve been living into the light, the darkness scatters. _ Mark Mallett, Hell Unleashed: The Sacraments,

Sacrament of Reconciliation - Penance / Confession

Jesus told St. Faustina:

“Write, speak of My mercy. Tell souls where they are to look for solace, that is, in the Tribunal of Mercy [the Sacrament of Reconciliation]. There the greatest miracles take place [and] are incessantly repeated. To avail oneself of this miracle, it is not necessary to go on a great pilgrimage, or to carry out some external ceremony; it suffices to come with faith to the feet of My representative and to reveal to Him one's misery, and the miracle of Divine Mercy will be fully demonstrated. Were souls like a decaying corpse so that from a human standpoint there would be no [hope of] restoration and everything would already be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full.” _ Diary of St. Faustina, “Divine Mercy in My Soul” (1448)

“When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy. Tell souls that from this fount of mercy souls draw graces solely with the vessel of trust. If their trust is great, there is no limit to My generosity. The torrents of grace inundate humble souls. The proud remain always in poverty and misery, because My grace turns away from them to humble souls.” _ Diary of St. Faustina, “Divine Mercy in My Soul” (1602)

Dr. Ray Guarendi

“‘Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned Your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with You. I need You. Save me once again, Lord, take me once more into Your redeeming embrace.’ How good it feels to come back to Him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking His mercy.” _ Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium

“When I go to confession, it’s for healing: healing the soul, healing the heart because of something that I did to make it unwell.” _ Pope Francis

Through the Sacraments, we receive sanctifying grace. The Sacrament of Confession is more powerful than the rite of exorcism. And living a Sacramental life is the best defense we have against the Devil.
